Research in the Mechanical Engineering Department is focused in five thematic areas: Solid Mechanics and Materials Science; Thermal/Fluids Sciences; Dynamic Systems and Design; Biomechanical Engineering, and Engineering Education.
As a Department, our goal is to be among the leading departments in scholarly productivity. Research in the Department is funded through Federal sources (i.e. National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Army research office, Office of Naval Research) as well as from Industrial partners. Faculty efforts are aimed at supporting graduate students through funded research. The products of this research are trained scientists and engineers with scholarly peer reviewed publications in journals, books, patents, and software tools. The target of these research results is to aid Maryland in quality and quantity and make the Department a sought after national resource in our fields.
